Home Sprinkler Valve Repair

Sprinkler valves are the gatekeepers of your irrigation system — each one controls water flow to a specific zone. When a valve fails, that zone either won't water at all or won't stop watering. Both problems waste water and damage your landscape. We diagnose and repair all types of sprinkler valves throughout San Marcos and Hays County.

Sprinkler Valve Problems We Fix

  • Zone that will not turn on — valve not opening on command
  • Zone that will not shut off — valve stuck in the open position
  • Solenoid failure — electric actuator not responding to the controller
  • Diaphragm damage — valve body not sealing or opening correctly
  • Cracked valve body — physical damage causing leaks
  • Debris blocking valve seat — preventing full closure
  • Wiring problems — open circuit or short preventing solenoid activation
  • Valve box flooding — water backing up into the valve enclosure

Zone Will Not Turn On

When a zone won't activate, the problem is usually at the valve or in the wiring between the controller and the valve. We test the solenoid for electrical resistance, check the wiring continuity, and manually test the valve to isolate the fault. Bad solenoids are the most common cause and are inexpensive to replace.

Zone Will Not Shut Off

A zone that runs continuously — even when the controller is off — almost always indicates a stuck valve. This usually happens when debris lodges in the valve seat, the diaphragm wears out and no longer seals, or the solenoid gets stuck in the energized position. Cleaning or replacing the valve typically resolves it.

Solenoid and Wiring Issues

Solenoids are the electrical actuators that open valves when your controller sends a signal. They can fail from age, water intrusion, or lightning. Wiring issues — breaks from digging, rodent damage, connector corrosion — prevent the signal from reaching the solenoid. We use a multi-meter to test both and identify the fault precisely.

Valve Repair vs. Valve Replacement

Many valve problems can be repaired by replacing just the solenoid or the internal diaphragm kit — a fraction of the cost of a new valve. When the valve body is cracked or corroded beyond repair, we replace the full valve. We always give you both options with pricing so you can make the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Solenoid replacement typically runs $75–$120. Full valve replacement is usually $120–$200 per valve, including parts and labor.
Yes. A zone that runs continuously can use 1,000–3,000 gallons per hour, depending on zone size and head count. During water restrictions, this can also result in fines.
Yes. We work on Rain Bird, Hunter, Toro, Orbit, Weathermatic, and other major valve brands. Most diaphragm kits and solenoids are interchangeable.
Most single valve repairs take 30–60 minutes. If we're servicing multiple valves or there are wiring complications, allow 1–2 hours.
Yes. We use a valve locator to find buried valves. Most systems have a valve box above each valve, but in older systems they sometimes get buried under mulch or sod.
