A backflow preventer is a valve assembly that prevents water from flowing backwards from your irrigation system into the potable water supply. This protects against contamination from fertilizers, pesticides, and soil that can enter irrigation water. Annual testing ensures the device is functioning correctly.

Why Backflow Prevention Matters

Backflow events — where irrigation water flows backward into the drinking water supply — can occur when city water pressure drops suddenly, such as during fire hydrant use or main breaks. The TCEQ requires backflow prevention assemblies on irrigation systems and mandates annual testing in many jurisdictions. Even where not legally required, testing provides peace of mind.

• Failed test cocks — valves used during testing that won't open or close properly
• Relief valve discharge — water escaping from the vent port between cycles
